Brandon Ellersen's Turkey Hunting Update

Turkey Hunting: Preparing for an Outrageous Hunt

Preparing for the hunt is one of my favorite parts. After all, it gets the juices flowing thinking about tracking down gobblers before even hitting the woods.

Of course, the first step in creating a successful turkey hunting set up involves actually scouting out a place to hunt. Sitting in the woods might pay off through dumb luck, but most hunters say the best use of time involves picking a place turkeys are known to actually frequent and setting up there before they arrive. This will require checking out potential spots prior to actually hunting. Many do this the day or even week before they intend to go out on a hunt. Read more about setting up for the hunt.

Check out this video clip. This monster gobbler ends up spitting and drumming just a few short feet from the camera. Get an eyefull of the size of this one!

Bagging the Dominant Gobbler

It goes without saying that one of the hottest topics among turkey hunting fanatics like you and me is bagging the dominant gobbler.

Providing for the ultimate challenge in an already challenging situation, hunting the dominant gobbler will take patience and a lot of it. Before it's even possible to line up the sights or fire an arrow off, you have to figure out which of the strutting toms is "the one." While it might be easier to bag a different tom, getting the dominant gobbler in your sights is the stuff great tales are made of. Find out what steps to take to improve your chances at scoring these noble dominant birds.
